A Buff, a Polish and a Hose Down: Our Trip to SamTrans

Patch editors got an inside tour of SamTrans.

On Thursday, SamTrans celebrated National Dump the Pump Day, which encourages Americans to use public transportation because of its environmental and financial benefits.

San Bruno Patch Editor Martin Ricard and South San Francisco Patch Editor Drew Himmelstein were treated to an inside tour of the SamTrans facility. At the South City facility where SamTrans keeps its buses, it also operates a maintenance shop and driver training program. But our favorite part of the tour was driving through the giant bus washer.

SamTrans recently unveiled a real-time arrival tracker for buses at the Millbrae station. It is also unveiling new fare boxes that include magnetic-stripe ticket readers and change cards for riders who pay more than the price of the fare.
