Strong Winter Storm Back East Prompts Flight Cancellations and Delays at SFO

Between 7 a.m. and noon March 6, an estimated total of 25 departing and arriving flights were affected, primarily for the Washington D.C. area, , SFO spokesman Doug Yakel said.

A winter storm in the Eastern U.S. caused more than 20 flight cancellations and numerous delays Wednesday at San Francisco International Airport, an airport representative said.

Between 7 a.m. and noon March 6, an estimated total of 25 departing and arriving flights were affected, primarily for the Washington D.C. area, , SFO spokesman Doug Yakel said.

"We've had some cancellations to New York JFK, and flight delays up to 60 minutes for flights in and out of Newark and Philadelphia," Yakel said in a phone interview.

Carriers affected included United, Virgin America and Delta, Yakel said.

The same storm prompted more than 1,100 flight cancellations in and out of Chicago's O'Hare International and Midway airports on Tuesday, the Chicago Sun-Times reported.

According to the National Weather Service, the storm in the East was expected to bring 6 to 10 inches of snow to the mid-Atlantic seaboard, including the Baltimore-Washington area.

The storm was forecast to move up the coast Wednesday evening into early Friday, and could bring 2 to 8 inches of snow to the New York City metro area and New England.
