Power Outage Affected Local Stores

A handful of local stores were affected by the power outage Sunday and Monday.

Plenty of shoppers were turned away at Trader Joe's at McLellan Drive on Monday because of the PG&E that began Sunday evening after an electrical wire fell.

Trader Joe's lost power for 16 hours, starting around 8:20 p.m. Sunday and ending Monday afternoon. The store was closed for that period of time, but is now open.

The Grocery Outlet on Hickey Blvd was without power for two hours on Sunday night, starting at about 8:20, 45 minutes before the store's usually closing time. A manager said the store lost "45 minutes worth of sales."

"We have a back up on one of the registers," the manager said. "So the customers in the store were able to make final purchases, but we didn't let anyone else in."

Costco on El Camino Real at Hickey Blvd lost power Sunday evening that was restored at 1 p.m. Monday. The store was closed for that period of time.

"We lost sales and credits," a Costco manager said. She said a rough estimate would be "close to $30,000 in merchandise and $250,000 in sales, and that does not include the gas sales we lost because the station was down too."

Costco brought in dry ice to keep perishable merchandise cool.

The Starbucks on McLellan Drive lost power Sunday night from about 9:30 to 2 a.m. No food was spoiled because the store's food delivery came after 2 a.m., early Monday morning.

A Starbucks employee said that if the store does lose power, food deliveries have an alternate location to deliver to.

In related news, the world's biggest black out in history occured in India today, leaving more than half a billion people without power for several hours.
