Local Unemployment Drops Below 10 Percent for First Time in Two Years

The unemployment rate is lower than it's been since April 2009.

South San Francisco's unemployment rate was 9.9 percent in May, the first time since April 2009 that it has been below 10 percent, according to preliminary data released Friday by the California Employment Development Department.

In April 2009, the unemployment rate was 9.6 percent, rising to 10.6 percent by the end of the year.

This May's rate was down 0.1 percent from April's 10 percent, and down from 10.7 percent one year ago.

Statewide, California's unemployment rate was 11.7 percent in May.
