South City Kid Snags Art Honors

A Ponderosa second grader win the opportunity to see her art work featured on SamTrans ad cards.

A second grader from walked away a winner at the Art Takes a Bus Ride event Wednesday afternoon at the SamTrans building.

Nikaella Mariano was among the six winners whose artwork will be featured on ad cards inside SamTrans buses and on the outside of the SamTrans “Art Bus” - exposing their work to nearly 12,000 young people who ride SamTrans buses, more than 25 percent of the District’s total ridership. Her teacher is Martha Chavez.

Mariano's work depicted a playground scene of kids playing on swings, a slide and a seesaw.

In addition to the honor of having her work on the Art Bus, Mariano also won a SamTrans monthly pass, a certificate, a framed copy of the bus ad card that displays her art and an assortment of art supplies. 

Other winners from the event were first-grader Olivia Pon from Belmont’s Central Elementary, third-grader Isaih Crump from Sandpiper Elementary in Redwood City, Cabrillo Elementary fourth-grader Sara Ababseh in Pacifica, and fifth-grader Sakina Bambot and sixth grader Meiling Lin from Tierra Linda Middle School in San Carlos.
