South City Residents Invited To Gun Buyback Event

Cash will be given in exchange for firearms at the SSF Courthouse April 13.

In an effort to crack down on local violence, area police departments are holding a gun buyback event on Saturday, April 13, 2013, from 9 a.m. to noon, at the South San Francisco Courthouse, 1050 Mission Road, South San Francisco.

The anonymous event, conducted in conjunction with the office of Congresswoman Jackie Speier, is only open to residents from Brisbane, Broadmoor, Burlingame, Colma, Daly City, Pacifica, San Bruno, and South San Francisco. Residents from these cities only are invited to bring firearms they wish to voluntarily turn in, no questions asked, and that once a firearm turned in has been found not to have previously been reported lost or stolen, it will be destroyed

Up to $100 for each handgun, shotgun, and rifle will be paid, and up to $200 for each assault weapon. Citizens are asked to transport their weapons to the event unloaded and in the trunk of their vehicles.

A similar gun buy-back event was held in January at the at the San Mateo County Event Center and in February police agencies from East Palo Alto, Menlo Park, and Palo Alto sponsored a gun purchase event as well.

At both events, gun owners received $100 per handgun, shotgun and rifle and $200 for assault weapons as classified in the state of California.

The office of Rep. Speier helped fund the cash buybacks and said around $63,000 was paid out for the guns collected at the San Mateo event.
