A Wonder Sponge You'll Swear By

These magic sponges are a great deal and amazing enough to be Christmas gifts.

In this column we pick everyday household items and use them in new ways. Saving time and money in a creative way is the name of the game.

This week: Magic Sponges

Today, I'm going to push a product that has changed my life of housework. I call them "Magic Sponges" and they are the best invention since the Long Island Iced Tea. They can wipe gummy grease residue off of your kitchen in seconds - it's like magic. No more scrubbing until your elbows get bursitis.

I buy mine at the Daiso $1.50 store in the Serramonte Shopping area in Daly City. (Daiso is also one of the coolest stores ever, with tons of stuff from Japan, all mostly selling for $1.50.)  If you want to go American, Mr. Clean sells a similar product at three times the price and half the size.

Hmmm...I must say, the Daiso sponges are the better deal.

What are they?

  • These sponges have been a mainstream product in Japan for a long time.
  • Made out of Melamine, they are white with very fine pores that cut grease well.
  • They come in varying lengths and sizes - I buy the 18-inch stick size.
  • You can buy them in precut squares or one long piece that can be cut as desired.

How Do You Use Them?

  • Find the grimiest, greasiest stove burner, grill rack or pan in your kitchen.
  • Cut a piece of sponge off and wet with water. Use a little soap for an intensified scrub if you like.
  • Rub away.
  • Watch the grime slide right off.

What Else Are They Good For?

  • Cleaning glass and mirrors
  • Getting finger prints off stainless steel
  • Polishing chrome fixtures
  • Wiping kitchen splatter from granite and granite composite counters
  • Polishing hard to lose stains off sterling silver

It's amazing!  Throw away the steel wool and other abrasives; these sponges do the job.

Be sure to read the product bag on when not to use them. They aren't designed to clean things like wood and plastic, etc.

And don't let your kids or the dog eat them!

One Christmas, I bought 20 bags of sponges and gave them to my family and girl friends. I felt that something this great should be noticed. They still thank me for that gift. Now, I'm passing this wonder on to you, the reader, in the hopes that these Magic Sponges leave a well scrubbed impact on you. Happy Cleaning/
