Mullin Finds Surprisingly Open Field in Assembly Race

Do you agree with Councilmember Kevin Mullin's priorities as he seeks state office?

South San Francisco Councilmember Kevin Mullin has just one Republican and no Democratic challengers in the state assembly race for the redrawn District 22.

That's a surprising lack of competition for an open race, Mullin, 41, told the Daily Journal.

“It is the only non-incumbent seat in the area with just two challengers. It is very unusual,” Mullin said to the Daily Journal.

With current Assemblyman Jerry Hill running for state senate, San Mateo County will have a whole new representative in the California Assembly: either South San Francisco's Kevin Mullin, a Democrat, or Redwood City's Mark Gilham, a Republican.

If Mullin wins, he'll succeed his father, Gene Mullin, in the Assembly, who held the seat of what used to be District 19 before Hill, from 2002 to 2008.

While Gilham's priorities are cutting the state budget, taking power away from public unions and protecting the Hetch Hetchy water system against terrorism, Mullin said he hopes to continue bringing high tech and biotech industries to San Mateo County through state investment, including finding a way to restore funds lost through the dissolution of redevelopment agencies. He credits the growth of South San Francisco's biotech sector to the redevelopment agency.
